We've kicked off The Prison Birth Project Knit-a-Thon. By collecting pledges from community members one stitch at a time, our goal is to raise $10,000 to help women and girls at the intersection of incarceration and motherhood.
How? One stitch at a time. If you're a knitter, you know what it means to make something yourself. You know the security and love that a child feels wearing something that a loved one has made for them. Just imagine then, the powerful feeling of support that a blanket made by an entire community could bring to a family going through a tough transition. That's why The Prison Birth Project has decided to kick off their first ever Knit-a-thon to help raise funds to continue their great work with currently and formerly incarcerated women.
Here's how the Knit-a-thon works. We are seeking knitters to volunteer their skills to knit a square that will later be turned into an Afghan blanket for one of the new mothers in PBP's programs. But that's not all, knitters will also go to friends, family, coworkers, or whoever, and get pledges to support them as they knit their square at the rate of one penny per stitch. And if each knitter gets 10 sponsors we will reach our goal.
Stitch by stitch, our goal is to make it to $10,000!
All you need to do to sign up is secure your commitment with a suggested donation of $20-$50 and we will set you up with a skein of yarn, care of WEBS America's Yarn Store, and all the materials you need to collect sponsors. You will also be automatically invited to a knitting circle where you can meet with the other knitters who are participating, and our Blanket Assembly Party where we will put together the blankets!
